In his Abécédario (Paris, 1858-1859, 17), Pierre-Jean Mariette noted: “J’ay veu chez M. Crozat un dessein d’académie du Rosso, où ce peintre estoit surnommé de Bonsi. – Peut-être a-t’on éxcrit de Bonsi pour de’ Rossi.”
This drawing has not been identified. If by Rosso, not according to the actual reading of the inscription but because Mariette thought, apparently, that it looked like Rosso’s, it is possible that it was done in France. It is not specifically mentioned in Pierre-Jean Mariette, Description Sommaire des Dessins de Grand Maistres…du Cabinet de Few M. Crozat, Paris, 1741, 4, where Rosso’s name appears.
