E.56,1 Embracing Children Flanking a Blank Square

Partially after Rosso.

Etching by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau, round, diameter, 20.

Herbet, IV, 1900, 301, (1969, 151), V (Grands Cartouches, Second Set), 1.

Herbet, 1937, 135.

Béguin and Pressouyre, 1972, 141.

Herbet said that this print, which I have not seen, is related to the decoration of the West Wall of the Gallery of Francis I (Fig.P.22, WestWall, a).  The embracing children would be similar to those beneath, not flanking, the two round, not square, stucco panels of this wall.
