Rosso rents a house in the via de’Servi for a year beginning July 1, 1518.

1518, indictione VI et die XXX mensis Iunii. Actum in populo Sancti Stefani Abbatie Florentine, presentibus Piero Francisci Anatonii de Terranuova nunptii publici Comunis Florentie, et ser Francischo ser Iuliani de Ripa, notario et cive florentino, testibus etc.

Iohannes olim ser Pierozzi de Cerbinis, civis florentinus, omni modo etc. per se et suos heredes etc. locavit et concessit ad pensionem Iohanni Baptiste olim Iacopi Gasparis, vocato el Rosso, pictori, presenti et conducenti,/unam domum cum palcis, salis, chameris, curia, lodia et stabulo et aliis suis habituris et pertinentiis, positam in populo Sancti Michaelis Vicedominorum de Florentia, in via que dicitur la via de’Servi, cui a primo dicta via, a II Iochacchini de Muccegliis, a 3 [blank], a 4 Antonii Angeli de Muccegliis, infra predictos confines, etc. pro tempore unius anni proxime futuri,//[fol. 367v] incipiendi die prima mensis Iulii proxime futuri et ut sequitur finiendi, pro pesnions dicti anni florenorum quatuordicim auri largorum in auro, solvendorum de sex menses in sex menses ratam, tamgemtem.  Cum pacto quod deficiente in solutione unius integre page, quod presens locatio intelligatur esse et sit finits ad beneplacitum dicti locatoris.  Et cum pacto quod dictus conductor non possit neque eidem liceat retinere in dicta domo aliquas mulieres inhonestas, nec etiam ludum nec aliquot [two illegible words] facere, que contrafaciente quod immediate intelligatur finita presens locatio ad beneplacitum dicti locatoris.  Et precibus et mandatis dicti conductoris presentis etc. fideiuxerunt etc. penes dictum locatorum Iohannesbaptista olim Francisci Iacopi, pictor, et Stefanus Angeli Pauli, legnaiolus, qui scientes se ad predicta non teneri et volentes efficaciter obligari, quilibet eorum in solidum et in totum obligaverunt, promiserunt etc. dicto locatori presenti etc. curare ita et taliter etc. ita quod [four illegible words] quod dictum contractum observabit etc. omina et singula suprascripta etc. alias etc sub infrascripta pena etc.  Que omnia etc. promiserunt quilibet eorum in solidum obligantes etc. actendere etc sub pena dupli etc.  Que pena etc. qua etc.  Pro quibus etc. obligaverunt etc. guarantigia etc. Rogantes etc.1


1 Transcribed from Franklin, 1994, 52, 300, Appendix B, DOCUMENT 6, who noted that the artist was forbidden from gaming or having prostitutes; Franklin also noted (1994, 3, 38, 52-53) that one of the guarantors was Giovanni Battista di Francesco Piccino, who later worked on the curtain and coat-of-arms for the altar in Ognissanti, which was to receive Rosso’s so-called S. Maria Nuova Altarpiece (see P.5, n. 14).  The other guarantor, Stefano, also appears as guarantor in the document of 1517 for Rosso’s second large, but unfulfilled, fresco commission at the Annunziata (see P.3 for the document, also mentioned in L.10).
