Child Care Council of Dutchess and Putnam, Inc.Created in 1970 as an advisory body to the Dutchess County government, the Child Care Council of Dutchess and Putnam, Inc. is the New York State designated Child Care Resource and Referral agency for both Dutchess and Putnam counties and is part of a network of 39 such agencies throughout New York State.

The Council offers parents information on child care and gives referrals to child care programs from its database of over 400 programs in the two counties. The Council registers, renews, regulates and monitors Family Day Care and School Age programs. Technical assistance and required training are offered on an ongoing basis to child care providers. We also administer the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) for home-based child care, guiding providers on how to provide nutritious snacks and meals to the children in care.

The Child Care Council of Dutchess and Putnam, Inc. works to promote affordable and quality child care, provide information and support to families, and strengthen the early childhood workforce in Dutchess and Putnam Counties.

Scholarship Outreach with Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley

The Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley works to strengthen our community by helping individuals, businesses and organizations establish and administer funds that support vital causes and charities. Partnering with our generous donors, we address current and emerging community needs through effective grantmaking and scholarships to improve the quality of life for all. Additionally, we provide technical assistance to help nonprofits operate more effectively.

The Community Foundations Program department is excited to partner with local students to help with a variety of projects and tasks to support our mission.

Responsibilities:

Community Outreach:

  • We are looking for creative ideas to better connect with schools, students and families and to promote the impact of these awards to the community.

Grantmaking

On the grantmaking side of our work, we also seek support to reach out to local nonprofits and community based programs, conduct site visits, and highlight the needs and assets of the community to our donor base.

Administrative Tasks

  • While we have some specific administrative tasks to tend to, we are interested in working with students to craft a meaningful experience connecting them to our local schools and nonprofits.

Hours:  Flexible. Camp Counselor with Adelante Student Voices

This opportunity is available during Summer 2022. This is an in person position.

The mission of Adelante Student Voices is to support undocumented students and their families in New York on their unique journeys to higher education, while supporting their self-advocacy so they can advance social justice in their communities. High school students join Adelante through an annual 10-day summer program at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie. We have two types of positions open in Summer 2022, either an Intern for a 10 week commitment, or a counselor for a 12 day commitment.

We are looking for people to join our summer team who:

  • Are committed to immigrant justice and youth empowerment
  • Have experience working in diverse group settings and with young leaders
  • Can commit the necessary time

Responsibilities:

  • Independent time necessary to familiarize self with schedule, materials, and mandatory child safety policy (online 5-hour course that can be completed in 30-minute intervals)
  • At least one virtual orientation meeting in late June prior to arrival on site
  • Arrive to Poughkeepsie by the morning of June 25th, for the in-person portion of staff orientation
  • Attend trainings related to being a mentor to new Adelante members
  • Organize materials within our space and create welcome signs
  • Plan icebreakers and other activities for the students between workshops
  • Full 10-day session with 20 high school students including overnights in the residence hall: June 26th at 2pm – July 5th at 9pm
  • Mentor a group of 3-4 students with daily check-in conversations
  • Assist workshop leaders, and take photos and notes during the workshops
  • Chaperon students as they navigate campus and during college visits
  • Provide support during computer lab sessions as students create personal plans
  • Clean common spaces and perform other daily tasks as part of a dedicated team
  • Final clean up/packing and evaluation in late evening of July 5th or on July 6th

Stipend: Preference will be given to counselors who can secure their own funding from their colleges. If needed for ideal counselor candidates, we can provide a stipend of $800.

    • Finalize schedule (workshops, guest speakers, college visits)
    • Make sure we have complete medical and school records for each participant, including calling families with reminders
    • Request financial sponsorships from local agencies and businesses
    • Act as a Counselor, including all of the responsibilities listed in position below
  • Final wrap-up
    • Write an evaluation summary of the 10-day program
    • Thank sponsors and workshop leaders
    • Help organize remaining supplies, files, and receipts
    • Follow-up with rising seniors about application tasks

Location: All work before and after the summer program is remote. During the summer session (June 25-July 5), the intern will live in the Vassar residence hall with the students and other staff. We will provide all meals during the orientation and summer program.

Desired Skills:

  • We have a strong preference for the intern to have a driver’s license to facilitate work (we can lend a vehicle). We may make exceptions for undocumented candidates.
  • Fluency in Spanish is valued to facilitate communication with most parents.

Hours: Ideally from May 23rd – August 2nd (10 weeks, full-time);  Date range is negotiable, with a preference for as much time as possible to help us prepare prior to the start of the summer session.
