About:

Founded in 2019, Celebrating the African Spirit’s (CAS’s) mission is to commemorate the lives of enslaved Africans and their descendants in Poughkeepsie and its close surrounds. Slavery existed in Poughkeepsie from the earliest days, and enslaved people laid the economic foundation for the City of Poughkeepsie and the Mid-Hudson Region. Yet there is very little awareness of this history. This lack of knowledge contributes to ongoing denial regarding the consequences of centuries of slavery and the pervasiveness of racism and inequality in America today. Our mission is aimed at all the residents of the City of Poughkeepsie, and CAS concentrates on education as well as public art and culture and direct support for young people.

Expected Responsibilities/Duties:

The spring semester will be a busy time for CAS, given Black History Month, when we will be doing big displays in Adriance Library, and visiting multiple PHS classrooms.  We will also be recruiting fairly early on for our summer intensive program. In addition, we are optimistic that our long-awaited, signature memorial marker, will be underway, and we will be publicizing and fundraising for this.  We are looking for students with:

  • People skills, including experience with both K-12 and older generations of folks.
  • Comfortability and ease with a Black-led and centered, multiracial, multi-class, multi-generational community organization and priorities.
  • Communications, technical, and social media skills.
  • Artistic/design ability

Skills:

  • Communications – emails, phone calls, in person outreach, Graphic design, Previous experience working with young people, Research skills, Social media management, Web design

About:

DAY ONE’s mission is to unleash every child’s maximum potential from day one by creating a model teaching and early learning community made up of teachers, families, and community partners who collaborate to obtain best outcomes for young children. We translate this mission into action with a trifecta of programs: The Teacher Apprenticeship Program (TAP) and resulting Small Business Initiative, The DAY ONE Early Learning Center, and our Family and Community Engagement initiatives, creating a triangle of strength around our youngest children.

At DAY ONE, we believe that communities are stronger when we prioritize the needs of teachers, young children, and families. We have created an ecosystem in which early childhood teachers are respected, valued, and compensated; where children learn through discovery and play; where family members are empowered to advocate for their children.

Position Description:

Position 1 (Spanish Curriculum Support): We’re looking for a bilingual (fluent in English and Spanish) student to support our Spanish speaking students in our Teacher Apprenticeship Program at DAY ONE. Your responsibilities will include translating educational slides and materials from English to Spanish, as well as providing on-site support and translation once a week, and collaborating with our leaders to bridge the language gap. Position 2 (Children’s Library Assistant): In this role, you would be responsible for cataloging and organizing our children’s library collection. Training for our cataloging system is provided in under 30 minutes. Additionally, this position supports the curriculum by creating children’s book lists by topic. The position can be either 0.5 or 1.0 credits and requires on-site work at our school, located 1.2 miles from campus. This work will significantly contribute to the accessibility and utility of our library resources, making a lasting impact on our institution’s educational mission. This role offers a unique opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience in cataloging, organization, and curriculum support while contributing to the educational development of young learners.

Position 3 (Classroom Teacher Assistant): This position is perfect for students who want a hands-on role within our DAY ONE classrooms. Our classrooms cater to children between the ages of 3 and 5, many of whom face developmental challenges. As part of this role, you will work directly with the children in a school setting, actively participating in their educational experience. Your responsibilities will encompass various interactive activities, such as guiding small groups through open-ended projects, engaging in dramatic play, and contributing to creative projects in our STEAM room. Additionally, this role involves helping with teacher tasks, including wiping down tables, resetting activities, sweeping, and ensuring the overall tidiness of the area. This opportunity provides a valuable hands-on experience for those interested in early childhood education and offers a chance to make a meaningful impact on the development of young learners. Students who are assigned Vassar tutors will be on break from 10/13-10/22, while students with Marist tutors will be on break from 10/20-10/22. There will be no tutoring 11/19-11/26 for the holiday. The last day of tutoring will be 12/3/23.

That leaves most with 10 tutoring sessions for the fall. Because there are so few sessions, we will not be able to keep students in the tutoring program if there are multiple absences. If a student misses two sessions of tutoring, the student will be removed from the program and another student will be assigned their day/time slot with a tutor.
