Of the animal called quemi and of its shape.
Translated by Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert
Quemi is the name of another animal in this island of Hispaniola, one I have not seen and cannot be found at present, as many assert. This is a four-legged animal as big as a warren hound or mid-size hunting dog. Its color is a brownish grey, like the hutía, and it is of the same type or form, except that the quemi is much larger. There are many people now living in this city who saw and ate this animal and praise it as a good dish; but in truth, according to what has been said and is known about the first settlers that passed through this island, one must assume that anything edible would have seemed good and delicious, even if it was not.
