On the mani (peanut), which is a certain species of fruit and a common form of sustenance among the Indians of this Island of Hispaniola and other islands of these Indies.

Translated by Max Eliot ’21

The Indians on this Island of Hispaniola have a fruit or legume they call mani; they plant and harvest it, and it is very common in their gardens and farms. They are the size of pine nuts with shells, and they esteem them as a healthy food. The Christians pay little attention to them, with the exception of some men of low rank, servants and slaves, and people who are not very particular as to taste. They are mediocre in flavor, of little substance, and a very common legume among the Indians, and it is abundant throughout.
