THE OVIEDO PROJECT: A COLLABORATIVE TRANSLATION PROJECT

The Oviedo Project is a collaborative digital translation and scholarly project that aims at producing a complete English translation of the complete text of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo’s Historia General de las Indias, the first ever. Produced by Vassar students, it will result in a full translation into English of the complete text, as well as critical and interpretative material. The translation and annotation work will bring together the editors and Vassar students in collaborative scholarly work.

Our aim is to produce a complete translation of the text by 2026, the 500th anniversary of the publication of the Sumario–the earliest iteration of the text–published in 1526.
