Celebrating the African Spirit

Non-profit, 15 – 20 team members
Address: Family Partnership Center, 29 N Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601
Action Areas: Education Policy and Equity, Expression, Arts, and Culture, Racial Justice
About: The mission of Celebrating the African Spirit is to acknowledge, articulate, research and commemorate the lives of enslaved Africans in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Our work is rooted in the reality that slavery existed in the MidHudson Region, and in Poughkeepsie from the earliest days, and enslaved adults and children were major contributors to the growth of what is now the City of Poughkeepsie and the Mid-Hudson Region. The works, language and traditions of Africans, both enslaved and free, are part of the legacy, which is American history, and should be taught to, and treasured by, all Americans. This lack of knowledge contributes to ongoing denial regarding the consequences of centuries of slavery, our violent and racist past, and the pervasiveness of racism and inequality in America today.
Our many projects are centered around memorialization, K-12 education (particularly PHS), and social justice-related collaborative city of Poughkeepsie initiatives.
Position Description:
Cultivating and fostering relations with young people and families at our Family Partnership office, supporting specific CAS initiatives (i.e., Poughkeepsie High School visits and recruiting for our summer intensive program, Black History Month events/displays, fundraising for CAS memorial marker at Waryas Park, building up online resource base)

Stringendo
About: Stringendo music school nurtures young string players to become passionate musicians and accomplished performers. Through orchestra concerts and fiddle gigs, in private lessons and summer music camps, students cultivate life skills: the ability to listen, to lead and, above all, to work together to achieve the extraordinary.
Address: these positions operate out of the Poughkeepsie Public School District
Position Descriptions:
Spanish translation – We are in need of bilingual translators so that all of our communication with the school children and their families can be translated and sent out in both English and Spanish. This is an ongoing hurdle for us. Besides translation of correspondence from English to Spanish, we are also in need of a bilingual speaker at our concerts and events so that announcements made to the audience can be given in both English and Spanish. In addition, it would be helpful to have a bilingual student available if we need to contact a parent who only speaks Spanish.
Media – We would like to have students visit the PK Strings after school programs and/or Saturday mornings orchestras to take pictures and video to record the orchestra’s activity. We want to document the history of the PK Strings project and capture the student progress to show how effective the program is, to encourage our students who will be able to see their progress, and to use as a necessary tool when seeking future funding for the program.
Student interviews – Again, visiting the PK Strings after school programs and/or Saturday morning orchestras to capture student and family interviews is another way we would like to document the program. Hearing students say what they are getting out of the program can assist us in documenting the program’s progress, allow us to be sure we are making a difference, and possibly give us another tool when seeking future funding.
Chaperones – We always need extra hands at our orchestra concerts, so chaperones would be a big help.
String Student Assistants – We could use students to volunteer in the PK Strings after school programs or the Saturday orchestras to help tune instruments and assist the teachers in a variety of ways.
Administrative/organize orchestra transportation – For some students, pickup and drop-off locations change week to week, so we can use help on Saturdays to confirm our drop-off location list with students during orchestra break, be at the bus at dismissal to confirm all students who should get on the bus have gotten on, then give a copy of the confirmed drop-off location list to both the bus driver and Stringendo’s director. This position may also entail making phone calls to check on students who may have been absent from orchestra, or to check on possible changes to bus routes.
Administrative/organize a field trip – Help organize a field trip for the PK Strings students to attend another orchestra’s performance or practice session. Seeing and hearing another accomplished orchestra play can be a source of inspiration for our students. Perhaps a trip to a Vassar College orchestra concert?
Hours: 4 hrs/week or 8 hrs/week
