Marginalia

The goal of this assignment is to carry on a dialogue with the author in the margins. Use the margins to summarize the text, ask questions, give assent, protest vehemently––don’t just color the pages with a highlighter. Every time you highlight something, write out in the margins why you wanted to underline it. Why is that passage important? Is it a major new point in the argument? A significant piece of support? A summary or the opposition? A particularly strong or particularly weak point?

Thurs. 9/14 Star Wars: Episode 1––The Phantom Menace (1999)

Trace a Trope/Image (required Writing Center consultation: www.mywco.com/vassar)

Identify an image that recurs throughout these three films. List in context each instance of that trope/image by citing the episode, approximate timestamp, and providing a quotation/sill-frame image that captures the trope/image. For instance, you might map the recurrence of a certain phrase or item. Perhaps your attention is caught by something much larger in scope such as irony. The choice is yours. Once you’ve mapped the trope/image, write a brief analysis (1-2 pages) of how it relates to larger motifs and themes of the prequels as a whole. Due next Thursday, 9/21
