Cameras for analysis of animal behavior

Awardee: Lori Newman

Semester of Award: Fall 2019

Materials Awarded: one high resolution camera (DMK 37bux264)

Project Description:

During URSI 2020 Joshua DeLeeuw, Bojana Zupan, Hadley Bergstrom, and I worked with a team of students to develop a repository of resources to help with the analysis of the videos using DeepLabCut (MiniURSI Github). Even during the pandemic, the students did a remarkable job learning how to use the software. They then created step-by-step instructions to guide new students in how to use the software for our research projects. My students are working on creating video guides to mirror these instructions as well.

We are continuing to use the camera to record animal behavior in multiple projects and are grateful to have such powerful technology to improve our analyses. It is important to note that while we are using this technology for animal behavior, the camera has an adjustable lens so it can be used to record and analyze other movements as well, for example, dance (MC Hammer DeepLabCut).
