Tablets and Speech Recognition Software for Flipped Classroom Materials and Recorded Student Problem Solving

Awardees: Nancy Pokrywka, Cindy Schwarz, Brian Daly, Susan Trumbetta, Ken Livingston

Semester of Award: Fall 2015

Materials Awarded: A samsung galaxy tablet

Project Description:

In the Physics and Astronomy department, we used the tablets as a platform on which students could record and self-narrate the solution of introductory to intermediate physics problems.

Recorded student problems were used for

* information gathering by faculty trying to determine students’ areas of strengths and weaknesses
* preliminary data for a proposal to the national science foundation (the proposal was not funded)
* assessment of one of our department’s learning outcomes

The project was effective and we expect that we will continue to use this technique for assessment activities.
