Chenrezig Altar with Mani Stones

Norbulingka, Sidhari, India, 2013.

Not far from His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s monastery in Dharamsala, India, is a community called Norbulingka, which fosters traditional Tibetan arts. The small wayside shrine depicted here is located at Norbulingka, reminding those who venerate the bodhisattva of his all-pervasive presence. Surrounded by carved and painted mani stones inscribed with the bodhisattva’s mantra, om mani padme hum, this lovingly constructed shrine demonstrates that Tibetan expatriates bring Chenrezig with them, wherever they go.
