A group of faculty who use or are interested in using spatial data in their classes and research are gathering on Monday, September 14th from 2pm to 5pm at the GIS Lab in Ely Hall to discuss some exciting developments that make spatial technology more accessible to our students with faculty:
- The installation of QGIS on Vassar computers, increasing multi-platform opportunities with ArcGIS online, and the now free Google Earth Pro.
- Every computer or tablet can now be a GIS workstation, freeing us from the confines of in-class or in-lab exercises.
- Several faculty members also have handheld GPS units and GIS data collectors that enable the collecting of new spatial data.
- A new GIS consultant who brings considerable experience to the Vassar community.
The agenda will be as follows:
2:00 – 2:15 – Intro and review of current interests and projects (with coffee and snacks)
2:15 – 3:00 – Presentations (10 min each – Neil Curri, Mary Ann Cunningham, April M. Beisaw, Dustin Frye)
3:00 – 4:00 – GPS exercise, QGIS demo
4:00 – 5:00 – Breakout discussions
A second discussion (TBA) is planned to follow-up on topics discussed. For more information contact Assistant Professor of Anthropology April Beisaw (apbeisaw@vassar.edu).
