Exploring Cinematic Language in Dual-Screen Videos

Mini Mads media players

Project Description:

In the realm of media art, dual screens offer the opportunity for an entirely new cinematic language: for example, narrative manipulation (showing two possible scenarios), innovative constructions of space (a wide view and an extreme close-up simultaneously), and multiple points of view (omniscient and internal to the characters).

My goal was to experiment with Mad Mapper software in the creation of dual screen videos and further explore the possibilities of doing this on location using the Mini Mads players. I am interested in including multiple channel media in a course on experimental filmmaking practices. In addition, I wanted to use the Mini Mads to present my own dual screen video in gallery settings where it wouldn’t be practical to install a computer.

After a long initial delay due to post-pandemic supply chain issues, I received the gear. I used Mad Mapper to present my film “Supersymmetry” at the Loeb Center. The software works well and is easy to use. I have also experimented with the Mini Mads in preparation for a gallery exhibition and they show great promise. I am excited to use them for the portability they offer — allowing synched video projections in any environment, such as outdoors, etc.

The course on experimental filmmaking practices is still in the works. I look forward to teaching a module on dual screens using this technology, which seems like an elegant solution.
