Adding graphical capabilities to pedagogy and research

Awardee: Mark Cleaveland

Semester of Award: Spring 2022

Materials Awarded: iPad and Apple stylus

Project Description:

My original intention was to have a means of easily creating visual figures for papers and presentations. I have found that increasingly journals ask for “visual abstracts” that can be used to publicize articles. Too, my teaching often would benefit from more creative control over my visuals. So, I had hoped that I iPad and stylus would serve a needed function.

Unfortunately, I never found a suitable app for this function. I think that I will just need to learn Adobe Illustrator, though a laptop isn’t the best interface for this program.

On the plus side, I found that an iPad plus stylus is GREAT for reading and marking up pdfs. I can’t highly enough of this functionality. I use it for reading and providing comments on student papers. I use it for marking up journal articles, and I use it for highlighting and making notes in books. So, in that sense the “experiment” was a success.
