Awardee: Matthew Schultz
Semester of Award: Spring 2016
Materials Awarded: Go Pro recorder
Project Description:
The hardware was used to record testimonial-type videos (between 45 – 60 seconds in length) in which students explain why they are going vegan for one day (or longer if they so choose). Some took the Go Pro with them into ACDC and/or the Retreat to show how they were eating vegan on campus. Students also had to reference one of the works we’ve studied up to that point in the semester (this assignment took place in week 6), and how that work influenced their decision. We then had a workshop with Baynard Bailey of ACS to edit these clips and combine them into a single video the following week.
The project was a partial success in that it showed all of us just how much time and effort goes into video production. In the end, we were unable to make our final, full-class video and instead settled for 17 individual clips.
Overall, it was useful for students to think about condensing a message into a one-minute video, to consider lighting and camera angles, and to struggle with the technology. Moreover, I think that writers quite enjoyed working with B-roll to create a more professional looking product.
