When you hear accordion music, is this scene from the Disney cartoon Lady and the Tramp the first thing that pops into your head?
This sure is what I think of; however, there is much more to the accordion than what is generally perceived in society. Though the accordion may seem like an obsolete instrument in today’s day in age, it is truly an innovative instrument, capable of producing a variety of unique sounds and effects. Contemporary accordionist Will Holshouser has produced a breadth of musical work, ranging from Cajun music to avant-garde jazz to indie rock. Though he is informed by French tradition, Holshouser is an experimental musician who puts a modern twist on the accordion and the way it is played. To hear more about Holshouser’s inspiration and process and to hear samples of his work, be sure to listen to this NPR podcast!
