On this day in 1936, the man who would grow up to create none other than The Muppets was born. On the show, beloved puppeteer Jim Henson helped viewers everywhere get to know The Great Gonzo, The Swedish Chef, and the Musical Chickens. His greatest brainchild, though, was easily the fan-favorite Kermit the Frog. Thank you, Mr. Henson, for sharing your beautiful mind with the world. We are all better for it.

Check out this moving tribute to Mr. Henson by the Muppets themselves:

Now check out the man himself in one of his last interviews on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee:

“Perhaps the substance of Jim Henson’s genius was the ability to see wonder far off in crazy directions and get people to follow him there.” – Roberta Moran, Dover Plains NY

“What was remarkable was that a man best known for his quiet gentleness left such a resounding echo in the world upon leaving it.” – People Magazine
