About the Festival

The Department of French and Francophone Studies is organizing a Tournées French Film Festival which will take place on campus in February 2020. This event is sponsored by the FACE Foundation and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. We will be screening five contemporary French and Francophone films and one classic film with an introduction and a post-screening discussion led by a faculty colleague. This year, the theme of “Identities” emerged from the film selection. These films ask big questions about identity under the scope of community; ethnic, sexual and linguistic diversity; intergenerational dialogue and solidarity; and the struggle to reconcile difficult histories with a positive future that is both pluralistic and global. Our selection of movies is an attempt to chart the multiple layers of identity and the tension between the visible and the invisible, the temporal and the spatial. It will also help us understand some of the political challenges that stem from hybrid and complex identities.

Tournées Film Festival is made possible with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the U.S., the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image Animée (CNC), the French American Cultural Fund, Florence Gould Foundation and Highbrow Entertainment.

The festival is cosponsored by the Department of Film, the Women’s Studies Program, the Dean of Faculty and the VSA French Club.
