Circus performances have a long history of appropriating cultures and publicly ostracizing individuals based on their race, appearance, or ability. As flow arts, fire spinning, and other performance features entered the circus scene, the cultural appropriation continued through elements being taken from cultures without respecting the traditions, beliefs, or intentions behind the flow props. While many circuses and flow arts organizations today aim to be considerate and more culturally conscious, there is still a long way to go to make circus an inclusive and respectful sector of entertainment.
