Upcoming Intensives and Advanced Topics Courses

Academic Year 2023-2024

INTENSIVES:

Phys 261.01(1.0 unit) Physical Complex Systems (fall only) Prof. Magnes

During this course, students will have an opportunity to study physical complex system(s). We will discuss concepts related to chaos and complexity such as Lyapunov exponents, embedding dimensions, bifurcation diagrams, recurrence plots, and more. There are opportunities for experiments as well as computations.

Phys 261.02(1.0 unit) Pop-up Physics (fall only) Prof. Merlo
In this intensive, the students will develop a set of physics demonstrations using pop-up book templates. The idea is that these demos are better at showing, in a tangible way, the physics behind some of the most commonly studied phenomena such as the magnetic field generated by a wire carrying current, among others. The minimum requirements are PHYS111 and PHYS112 or PHYS113 and PHYS114. Some knowledge of origami or pop-up cards is a plus.

Phys 262.01/262.51 (.50 unit) Physics Teaching/Learning/Communication (fall or spring) Prof. Schwarz Students will create educational materials (video or other formats) to communicate physics to the general public, physics students at all levels, K-12 students, and all audiences.

Phys 262.02/262.52 (.50 unit) Attendance and Reflections on an American Association of Physics Teacher meeting (AAPT) Prof. Schwarz Only open to students who attended a virtual AAPT meeting.
