After Hours Study Room Door Update

If you’re a denizen of the library’s after-hours study space and you don’t swipe your ID card before exiting through the after-hours entrance, an alarm will ring – and ring – and ring, until someone (an exasperated fellow student, or even a security guard) comes by to silence it with a swipe of his/her card.  Despite copious signage, the alarm is set off nearly every night the after-hours study space is open.  This is annoying and disruptive to students studying in the after-hours space and working at the Reserve and Technology Helpdesk, and it’s a burden on security as well. So now the library’s trying a new strategy.  Starting the first day of classes (1/23/13), a motion sensor with a built-in audio “reminder” will be operational from midnight – 8:00am Sunday-Thursday (with additional hours added during study and exam weeks).  Anyone within 40 feet of the door will prompt the device to broadcast the following message:

Please remember to swipe your ID before you exit the building.

The device will repeat the message until the person who set it off swipes out of the building, or until s/he is out of range of the motion detector.  How far is 40 feet, you ask?  The library will put up discreet signs to mark the boundary.

Tips for Surviving the End of the Semester

Hey, students! It’s almost the end of the semester and we know you are busy working on papers and studying for exams. Don’t forget to take advantage of the study space and services offered by the library. Check out the tips below to help you get through these last few weeks.

  • Need a place to study late? The library has an After-Hours Study Space located in the north wing of the library. This space is open Sunday through Thursday from midnight to 8 a.m.
  • Need help with library research? Click the yellow Ask-A-Librarian button on the library’s website to email, phone, chat, or text a librarian.
  • Need help citing sources for a paper? Check out our guide to citation styles.
  • Need a break from studying? Check out a film from the library! You can find films by searching the catalog and limiting to the video collection. Films can be checked out at the Reserves & Technology Help Desk (located in the north wing of the library). If you need additional help, check out this in-depth film guide.

Good luck as your semester winds down!

More Library Spookiness

Another scary thing is how easy it is to lose stuff while you’re in the library. Human error . . . or poltergeists at work? Either way, if you’re missing something, ask the staff at the circulation desk to check the lost and found (be prepared to describe valuables). This week’s treasures include keys, glasses, umbrellas, textbooks and other tomes, clothing, jewelry, and even a laptop.
