Getting to Know Poughkeepsie – Mary Lemza ’27

How many times have you wandered beyond our campus to explore the area around?

If your adventures have been limited to Poughkeepsie Galleria and NYC, this post is for you! We asked our friends and faculty for recommendations of places and locations worth a visit and encourage you to save these for the next adventure with friends or even a solo-date 🧭

  1. Dia:Beacon: If you’re interested in contemporary art, make sure to visit Dia:Beacon, one of the biggest museums of modern sculptures in the world located in Beacon, just a 30 minute drive from Poughkeepsie. It features large-scale installations and exhibitions.
  1. Storm King Art Center: While a bit further away (in New Windsor), Storm King Art Center is worth a visit. It is an outdoor sculpture park featuring large-scale contemporary artworks set amidst 500 acres of rolling hills and fields.
  1. FDR Presidential Library and Museum: Visit the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, located in nearby Hyde Park. Explore exhibits that showcase the life and legacy of the 32nd President of the United States.
  1. Appalachian Trail: If you’re up for an outdoor adventure, head to nearby sections of the Appalachian Trail, where you can hike scenic trails and enjoy breathtaking views.
  1. Innisfree Garden: Located in Millbrook, a short drive from Poughkeepsie, this stunning garden is a serene oasis featuring diverse landscapes, scenic trails, and a unique collection of plants.
  1. Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic Site: Visit Val-Kill, the home of Eleanor Roosevelt, and learn about her life and influential work as a social and political advocate.

Wondering how to get there?

Most of these locations are easily accessible with a car, but if nobody in your friend group has one, we got you. Here are a few tips on getting around the area:

  • Beacon is just a few stops away from the Poughkeepsie railway station (5ish USD, off-peak)
  • Most of the public busesbusses around Poughkeepsie are free to use if you show your Vassar ID.
  • G-Bus is also free to use
  • Yousra can supply some extra free Beacon bus tickets 🤫
