Media Storage
For more information, visit Vassar Library’s Digital Archiving & Preservation guide.
Best practice: follow the 3-2-1 rule!
- Make three copies
- Have at least two of the copies on two different types of media
- Keep one copy in a different location from where you live / work
The 3-2-1 rule in action
Scenario: you have just taken a picture for your CAAD project. You used the camera on your phone. What do you do next? Here are some ways to make this happen:
- Copy #1 – Using the WordPress app, upload the picture to your blog’s media gallery.
- Add a title.
- Add a brief description.
- Copy #2 – Using the Google Drive app, upload the picture to Google Drive.
- Copy #3 – Later on, download the picture to your project hard drive.
(Yes, the copy is also on your phone.)
Google Drive and WordPress are in different locations because they are online.
The hard drive is on a different medium from the web.
Voila! You’ve satisfied the 3-2-1 Rule. (Wasn’t that easy?)
TIP: in Google Drive, we’ve created “Trash” folders for you. If you feel the need to delete something shared, place the material in the “Trash” folder to move it out of the way without actually deleting it. Once the project is complete, review the “Trash” folder and delete items you now know you won’t need.
