Intramural soccer: “The Revenge”

by elgreissworth on February 6th, 2012

Hey all, my name is Eliana Greissworth and I’m from Lexington, KY. As a sophomore here at Vassar I’m beginning to notice certain trends, like how hard it is for people to come back from whatever vacation they’ve been on over winter break to cold snowy weather. This year is proving to be a bit different though: yesterday it was 55 degrees and there still isn’t a bit of snow on the ground. Perfect weather for the beginning of the intramural soccer season.

I’ve played soccer since I was little, but took a bit of a break in high school so I could focus on horseback riding a bit. Regrettably, I only played for my school senior year, so I decided I probably wasn’t up to trying out for the varsity team here at Vassar. That being said, one of the things I miss most is having a soccer team to belong to, which is why I decided to get some friends together to play intramural soccer. My freshman year here, they had a recreational as well as competitive league, but now it’s just one big league of teams made up of Vassar students. Games are twice a week, and are usually what I look forward to most in my week.

Last semester my team somehow ended up in the finals for the league, and it was by far the most intense non-varsity game I’ve ever played. I had no idea intramural sports could be so exciting! My team had been playing together all year, and we were all good friends, so we had great chemistry, as they say. We ended up winning the championship because of that game, and I got to relive that feeling of being on a winning team again- something I hadn’t felt since high school.

That experience got me thinking about getting together more teams for other sports, like softball or volleyball. There are so many different sports you can play at the intramural level here it’s actually hard not to overbook yourself with games…

Needless to say, I cannot wait until they start up again next week. This should be a particularly exciting season because some folks on our team defected to make their own team (we were getting a bit big in numbers), so we jokingly declared a rivalry against them. We call ourselves “The Revenge.” I’ll keep you all up to date on our status…
