Meet Liz

by admin on June 22nd, 2011

Liz Rowland is a rising sophomore from Boonton Township New Jersey.  She is currently undecided about what to major in (which is totally fine at Vassar because you have 2 years to decide).  Here are her reasons for choosing Vassar, in her own words:

When I first set foot on Vassarʼs campus in February of my junior year, I was immediately hooked. I had visited several campuses so far, but none of the others had pulled me in like Vassar did. It was more than just the architecture, the trees, and the academics. Sure the beautiful campus and the flexible academic system were a major part of my decision, but it was the individuality and creativity of the student body that made me feel most at home. There was music and life teeming around me and immediately I knew I wanted to be a part of this community. So I sent in my application on the Early Decision I deadline, submitted no other applications, and crossed my fingers that my New Year’s Eve would not be spent in misery. Thankfully, I was accepted.  When my letter finally came (I had been harassing my mailman for days) I practically did the bunny hop all the way from my mailbox to my front door. Those two little words: “Youʼre in,” changed everything for me.

I spent the next few months obsessively searching online for clues as to what my experience would be like, attempting to live vicariously through the students on the Vassar website. After months of careful research, I thought I had a pretty clear picture of what Vassar would be like. But I was wrong. It turned out to be even better than I had hoped. My friends here are incredible.  They are unique and interesting and intelligent. They have things to say and feel comfortable being themselves. Each class Iʼve taken has opened my eyes a little wider to the world. The professors are not just qualified, but they are also invested deeply in the Vassar community. They really want to see each student succeed. And thatʼs the most important thing here for me: Iʼm not just a face among thousands of other students. I am an individual member of a community.
