{"id":85,"date":"2021-04-07T14:28:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-07T18:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/vcantiracismequityandjustice\/?p=85"},"modified":"2022-03-28T12:27:57","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T16:27:57","slug":"closer-look-equity-detours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/vcantiracismequityandjustice\/closer-look-equity-detours\/","title":{"rendered":"Closer Look &#8211; Equity Detours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Pacing for privilege<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> happens <\/span><b>when the pace of change for an equity approach coddles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the comfort and hesitancy of <\/span><b>people with the least racial equity investment or interest. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">punishes and <\/span><b>ignores the people who most need and desire change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 (students, families, educators or any individuals or groups experiencing racism).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Examples of pacing to privilege:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A cultural competence approach that talks about cultural differences without naming or confront racism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An administrative response that emphasizes <\/span><b>the importance of staff buy-in<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or \u201c<\/span><b>meeting people where they are at<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d before implementing equity or taking a stance on an issue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brainstorm of spaces we inhabit.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is racial equity alive in those spaces? How or how not?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When do we participate in avoiding or rearranging inequities?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How does that detour work?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How was I disrupting or enabling that detour?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pacing for privilege happens when the pace of change for an equity approach coddles the comfort and hesitancy of people with the least racial equity investment or interest.
