The poem was featured in the exhibition entitled \u201cThe World After January\u00a020th, 2017,\u201d curated by Judy Nichols and Monica Church, in the wake of Trump&#8217;s inauguration, which brought together the work of community artists, poets and activists through an exhibit\u00a0and protest that circled Main building at Vassar. \u201cEach morning we wake up to a new order: bans, firings, and threats to liberty, humanity and the Earth.\u201d\u00a0 The work continues.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>VIGILANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This winter you will need insulated boots<br \/>\nand gloves; propane and wood, though<br \/>\nwind generators are ideal.<br \/>\nYou never knew camp etiquette<br \/>\nwould read like a manifesto.<\/p>\n<p>A thin shadow cast by shortening<br \/>\ndays. Solstice approaches<br \/>\nthen falls away. Everywhere, it falls<br \/>\naway. Sub-zero hands direct<br \/>\nkinship, traffic, a camera\u2019s shutter.<\/p>\n<p>What more can greed take, when protracted<br \/>\nsongs pitch shelter against<br \/>\nsets of men\u2019s pockets,<br \/>\nwhether thieves, plutocrats,<br \/>\nchurchgoers. Everything, you say.<\/p>\n<p>You erect tents and websites, assemble<br \/>\npittance before long histories of amassment.<\/p>\n<p>Free land, free labor, makes the rapacious few.<\/p>\n<p>Come spring, you will notice<br \/>\nnew needs. A windbreaker, you hope. For now<br \/>\nthose stars set deep in what seems<br \/>\na blacker sky.<\/p>\n<p>You pluck one, you think,<br \/>\nand place it in your gloved palm, almost<br \/>\nyour heart.
