Many of the accusations focus on Doctor\u00a0R\u00e9my Germain, a recent arrival who is known to help women facing\u00a0unwanted pregnancies, but who is probably not alone in having a\u00a0secret or two. Made under the German Occupation, <em>Le Corbeau<\/em> was\u00a0a tremendous public success upon its release but its coal-black\u00a0depiction of French life\u2014and its not-so-subtle reference to the culture\u00a0of denunciation under the Nazis\u2014proved highly controversial after the\u00a0Liberation. Clouzot was initially given a lifetime ban from filmmaking;\u00a0it took several years for him to be reinstated and for <em>Le Corbeau<\/em> to\u00a0be recognized as a masterpiece of mise-en-sc\u00e8ne, mood, and moral\u00a0complexity.
