Setting off on French\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">country roads to find subjects for JR\u2019s trademark mural-size portrait\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">photographs, the two artists focus on people generally outside of the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">spotlight: retired miners, factors workers, the wives of dockers, and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">farmers. Each encounter fills in another piece of an idiosyncratic\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">portrait of modern-day France, as well as the evolving relationship\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">between open-hearted Agn\u00e8s Varda and mysterious JR. The give-and-<\/span><span class=\"\">take between Varda and JR plays out in a fascinating through-line\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">devoted to Jean-Luc Godard, Varda\u2019s old friend and sole surviving\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">colleague of the French New Wave. But make no mistake: while the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">film is credited to both artists, Varda is definitely calling the shots. As\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">ever<\/span><span class=\"\">, her montage is allusive, playful, rapid-fire, occasionally jarring\u2014<\/span><span class=\"\">in short, totally in keeping with her singular way of thinking.
