{"id":16,"date":"2013-01-09T14:15:39","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T19:15:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/seneca\/?page_id=16"},"modified":"2013-03-03T09:51:17","modified_gmt":"2013-03-03T14:51:17","slug":"instructions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/seneca\/instructions\/","title":{"rendered":"Instructions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Instructions for posting to the class commentary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone is required to make two kinds of posts regularly for the rest semester: vocabulary and syntax and grammar. \u00a0You may also make interpretive posts as you would like.<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--commentblock-->Vocabulary posts<\/strong>: \u00a0<em>Everyone must post at least three vocabulary posts a week, every week<\/em>. \u00a0Vocabulary posts (which can address individual words or phrases) should not just provide a definition for a word, but should defend that definition with at least a reference to\u00a0the <em>Lewis and Short<\/em>\u00a0or <em>OLD\u00a0<\/em>entry that supports it. \u00a0These post are intended to help build lexicographical skills. There is often ambiguity about what the precise meaning or nuance of a word is, so a reply that discusses or elaborates on a vocabulary post can count towards your weekly total.<\/p>\n<p><!--commentblock--><strong>Syntax and grammar posts<\/strong>: E<em>veryone must post at least three syntax and grammar posts a week, every week<\/em>. \u00a0Syntax and grammar posts are intended as a way for you to ask questions about something that is confusing you or to share (with bragging rights) your hard earned conclusions about how a word, phrase, or clause is functioning. \u00a0<strong>Most s&amp;g posts should be in the form of a question<\/strong>. Your question can suggest an answer or not. Others can answer or discuss your question. \u00a0Answers and discussion posts can count towards your weekly total.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to answer as many questions about how to read the text as possible before class, so that we can use class time for the most interesting or intractable points of grammar and syntax and for the interpretive discussions. \u00a0Therefore, don&#8217;t be afraid to disagree and discuss a point until some consensus is reached.<\/p>\n<p><!--commentblock--><strong>Interpretive posts<\/strong>: Interpretive posts are intended to suggest literary or historical topics for discussion online or in class. \u00a0They can be questions (but not open ended questions like &#8220;what&#8217;s up with that?&#8221;); they can also simply point out something that interested you in the section. \u00a0Most interpretive posts should be made in the &#8220;comments on whole page&#8221; section. \u00a0Longer interpretive posts that seem to raise issues related to the whole text can be put in the &#8220;general comments&#8221; section. \u00a0Interpretive posts should begin discussions, so replies that continue to discuss a topic can count towards your weekly totals.<\/p>\n<p><!--commentblock--><strong>Due Dates:<\/strong> \u00a0P<em>osts should be made regularly and not just before the class where the readings are due.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Instructions for posting to the class commentary: Everyone is required to make two kinds of posts regularly for the rest semester: vocabulary and syntax and grammar. \u00a0You may also make interpretive posts as you would like.
