Mary Magdalen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1530-1540?<\/p>\n<p>Painting, Cabinet des Peintures, Ch\u00e2teau, Fontainebleau.<\/p>\n<p>The inventory of 19 January 1692 (verified in October 1694) of the Cabinet des Peintures at Fontainebleau (Herbet, 1937, 94) records: \u201cUne Magdalen, peinte sur bois, par Rousse.\u201d\u00a0 If this picture was actually by Rosso, it was most likely painted in France, unless it was brought from Italy after his death.\u00a0 The inventory listing is mentioned by B\u00e9guin in Cox-Rearick, 1972, 5, and in Scailli\u00e9rez, 1992, 18, with the attribution to Rosso as made by d\u2019Estrechy.<\/p>\n<p>For an anonymous etching of a cartouche that seems to be after Rosso\u2019s design and that frames a scene of the <i>Assumption of the Magdalen<\/i>, see <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/engravings\/e-159-anonymous-cartouche-magdalen\/\">E.159<\/a>.\u00a0 But this print does not appear to reflect a design for an independent panel painting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1530-1540?
