{"id":7841,"date":"2012-12-11T17:36:05","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T22:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/?page_id=7841"},"modified":"2013-04-08T11:19:54","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T15:19:54","slug":"l-54","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-54\/","title":{"rendered":"L.54 Plans for the Alteration of Vaults in Notre Dame in Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1537<\/p>\n<p>Grodecki (1975, 105, n. 34, 109, V.(I.) 4) published the following document of 19 December 1537 from the \u201cproc\u00e8s-verbaux capitulaires\u201d of Notre Dame (here slightly corrected):<\/p>\n<p>Paris, Archives Nationales, Fonds capitulaires de Notre-Dame, LL 1140, p.156.<\/p>\n<p>[In the margin] \u201cDe lathomia ab domino de Rossy pictori facienda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemoveantur illi grossi lapides onerantes voltas ecclesie e regione altaris ardentium ejusdem et fiat lathomia secundum quod advisabit dominus de Rossi; propter quod domini Croysart et prefatus Rossy conveniant cum operariis prout decentius et utilius viderint faciendum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vaults in Notre Dame on which Rosso was to give his advice are specified as in the area of the \u201caltaris ardentium,\u201d which was located behind the main altar and in front of the central arch of the arcade that separated the sanctuary from the ambulatory (No. 2 on plan: <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/12\/Notre-Dame-Paris-Plan.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.Notre Dame, Paris, Plan<\/a>).<a href=\"#endref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It is likely that the changes that the Chapter of Notre Dame authorized Rosso to indicate were not simple repairs to the masonry of the vaults but were part of an artistic project related to these vaults.\u00a0 There is no record that any alterations that Rosso may have proposed were actually carried out.\u00a0 But if they were then it is possible that they were related to the \u201cymagis supra voltas ecclesie\u201d that he had begun for Notre Dame and, it would seem, left unfinished at his death (see also <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-55\/\">L.55<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-56\/\">L.56<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-58\/\">L.58<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> The \u201caltaris ardentium\u201d or \u201cautel des ardents\u201d was also called the \u201cautel de la Sainte-Trinit\u00e9,\u201d and in documents the \u201cparvum altaria\u201d to distinguish it from the \u201cmagnum altaria;\u201d see Guilhermy, 1856, 114; and Timbal and Metman, 1967, 116, 124 and n. 43, 125, Fig., 130 (plan, no. 2), 129-130, who stated that it was higher than the main altar so that it could be seen from the choir stalls (see their Plate V of a drawing by Viollet-le-Duc in the Biblioth\u00e8que Nationale, Paris, which does not, however, entirely correspond to their plan).\u00a0 According to Gillerman, 1975, 57, it was called the \u201cautel des ardents\u201d because \u201cit was here that the bodies of important royal and ecclesiastical persons lay on a ceremonial bier covered with a <i>chapelle ardente<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0 On this wooden structure to which candles were affixed, see Giesey, 1960, 14 and n. 55, 43, n. 13, 44, and Fig. 11, although he speaks of a <i>chapelle ardente<\/i> erected for the funeral of Francis I in the choir of the cathedral.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1537 Grodecki (1975, 105, n. 34, 109, V.(I.) 4) published the following document of 19 December 1537 from the \u201cproc\u00e8s-verbaux capitulaires\u201d of Notre Dame (here slightly corrected): Paris, Archives Nationales, Fonds capitulaires de Notre-Dame, LL 1140, p.156.
