{"id":7809,"date":"2012-12-11T17:28:51","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T22:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/?page_id=7809"},"modified":"2013-04-04T10:10:22","modified_gmt":"2013-04-04T14:10:22","slug":"l-38","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-38\/","title":{"rendered":"L.38 Design for the Frame of Michelangelo\u2019s Leda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1532<\/p>\n<p>In Antonio Mini\u2019s letter of 1532 written probably in Paris and sent to Francesco Tibaldi in Lyons (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/documents\/doc-21\/\">DOC.21<\/a>), he discussed Michelangelo\u2019s <i>Leda<\/i> that he had brought to France and a copy that had been made of it (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/drawings\/d-74-leda-and-the-swan-after-michelangelo\/\">D.74<\/a>).\u00a0 In this context he wrote: \u201cE\u2019 Roso far fare unno adornamento, h\u2019\u00e8 s\u00ec gra[n]de e s\u00ec grosso, he pessa pi\u00f9 he no fa el mio gra[n]de quadro he si fa; inspe[n]de in deto adorname[n]to franhi 200, vi va drento pincola cossa di pitura, si \u00e8 uno aonovato.\u201d\u00a0 Given its size, thickness, weight, and expense, the \u201cadornamento\u201d was almost certainly a frame for Michelangelo\u2019s <i>Leda<\/i>, which was held for the king by his treasurer, Giuliano Buonaccorsi, rather than for the copy of it that Buonaccorsi also had.\u00a0 In addition to what Mini seems to indicate was its extraordinary size, the frame had also by his account a small painting set within it, which was a novelty, assuming that Mini\u2019s \u201caonovato\u201d is to be understood as \u201cannovato.\u201d\u00a0 Although Mini did not actually say that this frame was designed by Rosso, this seems surely to be implied by the remark that Rosso was having it made.\u00a0 As it would have been made of wood, it is possible that it was carved by Francesco Scibec de Carpi, who late in 1530 or in the first half of 1531 had made a frame for a large picture that Rosso had painted for the king (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-36\/\">L.36<\/a>), which may have been the lost <i>Judith<\/i> mentioned in the sources (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-35\/\">L.35<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Mini\u2019s comments on the size of the frame and on the novelty of it having a picture set within it bring to mind the kind of settings for large pictures that Rosso around this very time was designing for the Pavilion of Pomona (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-39\/\">L.39<\/a>) and, beginning at the same time or only slightly later, for the Gallery of Francis I (P.22).\u00a0 Although these settings or frames were in stucco and surrounded frescoes, they had set within them smaller pictures.\u00a0 Furthermore, the end walls had panel paintings set within stucco frames.<\/p>\n<p>In September of 1536 Rosso was paid (see P.22) for having Michelangelo\u2019s <i>Leda<\/i> sent from Buonaccorsi\u2019s house in Paris to the ch\u00e2teau at Fontainebleau.\u00a0 It was presumably sent in the frame that Rosso had designed for it in 1532.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1532 In Antonio Mini\u2019s letter of 1532 written probably in Paris and sent to Francesco Tibaldi in Lyons (DOC.21), he discussed Michelangelo\u2019s Leda that he had brought to France and a copy that had been made of it (see D.74).\u00a0 In this context he wrote: \u201cE\u2019 Roso far fare unno adornamento, h\u2019\u00e8 s\u00ec gra[n]de e [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"parent":826,"menu_order":41,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-7809","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/7809","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/13"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7809"}],"version-history":[{"count":7,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/7809\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9040,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/7809\/revisions\/9040"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/826"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7809"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
