Maria delle Lagrime, Arezzo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1529<\/p>\n<p>On this project and its documentation, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/drawings\/d-31-34-lagrime-project-arezzo\/\">Preface to D.31-34<\/a> and the related entries.<\/p>\n<p>Vasari, 1568, II, 208 (Vasari-Milanesi, V, 164): \u201cA compiacenzo del quale [i.e. Giovanni Pollastra] fece il Rosso un bellissimo modello di tutta l\u2019opera, che \u00e8 hoggi nelle nostre case d\u2019Arezzo.\u201d\u00a0 It was Pollastra who devised the iconographic scheme for this project.\u00a0 As Vasari indicated, Rosso made this \u201cmodello\u201d for Pollastra (died c. 1541-1542).<a href=\"#endref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 By 1568 it was in Vasari\u2019s house in Arezzo.<a href=\"#endref2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It cannot be determined with certainty what Vasari was referring to by his phrase: \u201cbellissimo modello di tutta l\u2019opera.\u201d\u00a0 He may have meant a wood and plaster architectural model of the atrium of S. Maria delle Lagrime fully painted by Rosso with the scenes that were to be frescoed.\u00a0 Ragghianti Collobi, 1974, 118, suggested instead that what is meant is several drawings for this project.\u00a0 It should be pointed out that this is the only reference to a \u201cmodello\u201d in Vasari\u2019s \u201cLife\u201d of Rosso.\u00a0 As the \u201cmodello\u201d was of the entire work it must have been done in 1529 for this project was first commissioned in November 1528.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin, 1994, 236, thought that \u201cuno catino de terra desegnato\u201d of the 1532 inventory of Rosso\u2019s possessions left behind when he fled Arezzo (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/documents\/doc-13\/\">DOC.13<\/a>), which I thought (Carroll, 1987, 29) meant \u201ca painted terra-cotta basin,\u201d refers, through \u201ccatino\u201d as an architectural term for a bowl-shaped vault, to a three-dimensional model that Rosso made for the Lagrime frescoes, and hence connected to the \u201cmodello\u201d mentioned by Vasari.\u00a0 This is very possible.<a href=\"#endref3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The confraternity had \u201cun catino e quattro cartoni\u201d and a confraternity inventory of 1547 specifies \u201cuno catino del disegno de la volta su la Madonna,\u201d while in 1583 Giovanni de\u2019Medici received from the confraternity not only Rosso\u2019s \u201cCartoni\u201d for the Lagrime project but also the \u201ccatino\u201d (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-26\/\">L.26<\/a>).\u00a0 The \u201cmodello\u201d of Vasari\u2019s account was made for Pollastra, but it still could have been among the items that Rosso left behind when he fled Arezzo.\u00a0 According to Vasari\u2019s own account it was later owned by him, unless there was a second \u201cmodello,\u201d which does not seem likely.\u00a0 After his death in 1573 it would seem to have been returned to the confraternity.\u00a0 In the documents of 1547 and 1583 the item in question is called a \u201ccatino,\u201d while that in the inventory of Rosso\u2019s possessions mentions it as made of \u201cterra.\u201d\u00a0 If that \u201ccatino\u201d is an architectural model, \u201cterra\u201d would refer to plaster.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup>See A.
