{"id":7761,"date":"2012-12-11T17:18:29","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T22:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/?page_id=7761"},"modified":"2013-02-01T16:37:15","modified_gmt":"2013-02-01T21:37:15","slug":"l-14a","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-14a\/","title":{"rendered":"L.14A Pictures and Portraits in Florentine Houses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>c. 1515 &#8211; c. 1520<\/p>\n<p>Vasari, 1550, 797, in the \u201cLife\u201d of Rosso: \u201cEt per le case de\u2019cittadini si veggono pi\u00f9 quadri, e molti ritratti.\u201d\u00a0 Vasari, 1568, 205 (Vasari-Milanesi, V, 158), the same.<\/p>\n<p>This sentence appears immediately after Vasari\u2019s mention of the arms of Leo X, which seem to have been executed in 1515, and before his reference to the entry of Leo X into Florence, which took place 30 November 1515.\u00a0 However, it also follows the mistakenly placed account of the S. Maria Nuova Altarpiece that was executed in 1518.\u00a0 What Vasari is referring to in this sentence would seem to be small paintings and portraits done from around 1515 until the time that Rosso went to Piombino, around 1520 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-15\/\">L.15<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-16\/\">L.16<\/a>). \u00a0From this period three portraits have survived: the <i>Portrait of a Young Woman as Mary Magdalen<\/i>, in Florence (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.1a-Portrait-of-Woman-color.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.1a<\/a>), the <i>Portrait of a Young Man with a Letter<\/i>, in London (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.6a-Man-with-Letter-color.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.6a<\/a>), and the <i>Portrait of a Young Man<\/i>, in Washington, D.C. (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.8a-Washington-Portrait.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.8a<\/a>).\u00a0 One small religious painting is known, the <i>Holy Family with the Young St. John<\/i>, in Baltimore (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.7a-Madonna-Baltimore-color.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.7a<\/a>), although if one slightly extends the period one could include the <i>St. John the Baptist<\/i> of 1521-1522 in a private collection in Florence (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.11a-St.-John-color.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.11a<\/a>).\u00a0 These are the only small pictures by Rosso that are known today and they are all more or less datable within the period covered by Vasari\u2019s sentence.\u00a0 They were most likely all done in Florence.\u00a0 It is possible that there were others, some of which might still be discovered to support further Vasari\u2019s references to \u201cpi\u00f9 quadri\u201d and \u201cmolti ritratti.\u201d\u00a0 See <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-14b\/\">L.14B<\/a> for a seventeenth century reference to \u2018pi\u00f9 quadri\u2019 made for the Ginori.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>c. 1515 &#8211; c. 1520 Vasari, 1550, 797, in the \u201cLife\u201d of Rosso: \u201cEt per le case de\u2019cittadini si veggono pi\u00f9 quadri, e molti ritratti.\u201d\u00a0 Vasari, 1568, 205 (Vasari-Milanesi, V, 158), the same.
