Deliberazioni a partiti, condotte e stanziamenti, 11<\/i>, fol. 93-93<sup>v<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA d\u00ec 18 Gennaio 1515 [modern 1516]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cItem a conto di:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpese di archi et ornamenti facti nella Citt\u00e0 fiorini quattrocento undici larghi in oro et lire dugento cinquanta nove, soldi cinque piccoli sono che tanti si sono spesi a decto conto nella tornata di nostro Signore da Bologna cio\u00e8 fiorini CCL.ta d\u2019oro a Jacopo da San Sovino per havere facto l\u2019ornamento della faciata di fuori della porta et antiporta di San Gallo et fiorini CL.ta al Rosso dipinctore per havere facto l\u2019ornamento del gabellino et l\u2019ornamento tra la porta et antiporta et fiorini XI larghi in oro a Ser Giovanni Visoni per havere riadornato et alzato it palco della Sala el Papa et factovi uno festone a decto porta [93<sup>v<\/sup>] di San Gallo.\u00a0 Et il reso, che sono lire CCLVIIII, soldi V piccoli a pi\u00f9 persone per veste et ornamenti accatati et condurre l\u2019artiglieri et trarle, et per paglia mandata ad Sancto Antonio et altro, come di tucto appare canto di mano del proveditore, visto et approvato per decto magistrate in filza, in tucto&#8230; fiorini 411 lire 249 soldi 4 [&#8230;]\u201d<a href=\"#endref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Vasari, in the \u201cLife\u201d of Jacopo Sansovino (Vasari-Milanesi, VII, 495-496), mentioned the arch by that artist: \u201cPartito il papa di Firenze, ed abboccatosi a Bologna con il re Francesco Primo di Francia, si risolv\u00e8 tornarsene a Firenze.\u00a0 Onde fu dato ordine al Sansovino che facesse un arco trionfale alla porta San Gallo: onde egli, non discordando punto da se medesimo, lo condusse simile all\u2019altre cose che aveva fatte, cio\u00e8 bello a maraviglia, pieno di statue, e di quadri di pitture ottimanente lavorati.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his <i>Ricordanze<\/i>, under 22 December 1515, Bartolomeo Masi stated that the Pope, returning from Bologna, \u201centr\u00f2 in Firenze per la porta a santo Gallo; a la quale porta la Communit\u00e0 di Firenze, per trionfo e magnificienza della ritornata del nostro santissimo pastore, l\u2019aveva fatta parare et adornare sontuosamente di drento e di fuori, et ancora tutto l\u2019antiporto di legniami lavorati bene a bene dipinti, commesso in detto lavoro cierti telai di tela, dipinti a figure antiche del testamento vecchio, dipinti di mano di buoni maestri: el quale adornamento era, a vederlo, una cosa ricca e bella, ed era fatto alla simiglianza che era la porta a santo Piero Gattolini, quando el sopradetto Ponteficie entr\u00f2 in Firenze, inanzi ch\u2019egli andassi a Bolognaia,&#8230;\u201d<a href=\"#endref2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among Guglielmo de\u2019Nobili\u2019s poems in praise of Leo X appears the following sonnet entitled: <i>L\u2019arco dell Porta a san Gallo nella<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>tornata di Papa Leone X da Bologna<\/i>, which records:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>La gloria grande, el celebrate honore<br \/>\nChe hoggi fra \u2019l freddo sasso il legno serra<br \/>\nMostra le lite spente in cielo et in terra<br \/>\nEt Marte dispogliato dal valore<\/p>\n<p>Qui mostra la virt\u00f9 suo bel colore<br \/>\nPortar l\u2019uliva et non cercar piu ghuerra<br \/>\nChiuso ha il delubro Jan, qui il crin si afferra<br \/>\nDella calumpnia piena di terrore<\/p>\n<p>Dunque che passa qui fermisi alquanto<br \/>\nEt udir\u00e0 da me felice porta<br \/>\nDonde deriva il mio storioso canto<\/p>\n<p>Quel pietoso leon che volge il cielo, exorta<br \/>\nQue passar de sotto celeste amanto<br \/>\nEt pace et gaudio all\u2019universo porta.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\">Vale<a href=\"#endref3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From these sources it cannot be known what the nature of Rosso\u2019s \u201cornamento\u201d was for the \u201cgabellino\u201d (the custom officer&#8217;s station) and for the area \u201ctra la porta [di San Gallo] et antiporta [di legniami].\u201d\u00a0 Masi indicated that the \u201cporta\u201d and the \u201cantiporta\u201d showed scenes and figures painted on canvas from the Old Testament.\u00a0 Ciseri, 1990, 142, suggested, from Nobili\u2019s sonnet with its reference to Mars \u201cdispogliato dal valore \/ Qui mostra la virt\u00f9 suo bel colore \/ Portar l\u2019uliva et non cercar pi\u00f9 ghuerra\u201d and with reference to the intention of Leo X\u2019s meeting with Francis I in Bologna, that the triumphal arch may have been decorated to present a program of Peace. One may also wonder if Nobili\u2019s reference to Mars indicates that the decorations at the Porta San Gallo showed ancient subjects combined with those from the Old Testament mentioned by Masi.<\/p>\n<p>It can probably be assumed that Rosso\u2019s paintings were related to a program that embraced all the parts of the ensemble at the Porta San Gallo (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/12\/Fig.Porta-San-Gallo.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.Porta San Gallo<\/a>).\u00a0 It is not necessary to conclude that he provided only ornament, as \u201cornamento\u201d is also used to designate what Sansovino created, which, aside from architecture, was most likely sculptured figured reliefs. But just what it was\u00a0<em>between<\/em> the Porta San Gallo and the wooden &#8220;antiporta&#8221; that received Rosso&#8217;s paintings on canvas (<i>ornamento<\/i>)\u00a0cannot be determined from the published records.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> From Ciseri, 1990, 275, Doc. XXXVII.\u00a0 See also Franklin, 1994, 29, 297, Appendix A, DOCUMENT 9, giving the date 18 January 1516, that part of the document that pertains to Rosso; Franklin describes the work as \u201cminor decorations of the customs house at the San Gallo gate and the space between the inner and outer door of that same gate.\u201d But while the old and massive Porta San Gallo was made of stone, the <em>antiporta<\/em>, according to Masi (see below) was of timber construction. The location of the triumphal arch in relation to the Porta San Gallo may have been close to the site of the arch erected in 1738 for the arrival of Francis of Lorraine and his consort in January of 1739.
