Annunziata, Florence.<\/p>\n<p>Franklin, 1994, 4, 12, 13, 296, Appendix A, DOCUMENT 2, 316, transcribed the following document as related to two coats-of-arms of Pope Leo X and Giuliano de\u2019Medici painted by Rosso assisting Andrea di Cosimo Feltrini:<\/p>\n<p>Archivio di Stato, Florence. Corp. RS, 119, vol. 705, <i>Entrata e Uscita del Camarlingo, segnato D<\/i>, 1512-1516, fol. 1o3<sup>v<\/sup>:<\/p>\n<p>[238] \u201cA [spese di] straordinario a d\u00ec decto [5 Settembre 1513] lire dixinove, lire 14 port\u00f2 Andrea dipintore, e lire 5 port\u00f2 Giovanni Batista dipintore, per dipignere l\u2019arme del Papa e di Giuliano &#8212; lire 19\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Franklin thought these payments might be connected to the arms of Leo X at the Annunziata described by Vasari in the \u201cLife\u201d of Feltrini (Vasari-Milanesi, V, 207) as \u201cnel cortile&#8230;fra le dua porte.\u201d\u00a0 This was a modest commission, the differences in payment indicating that Rosso\u2019s role was subservient to Andrea\u2019s, as Franklin interpreted the document.\u00a0 Thus he thought it may have been Feltrini who introduced Rosso to the Servites.<\/p>\n<p>If this document does refer to Rosso, who would appear only as \u201cGiovanni Batista,\u201d he may have executed the arms themselves while Feltrini did the decorative surround, perhaps with figures.\u00a0 It should be noted that only two weeks later when paid for two other coats-of-arms at the same church (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-7\/\">L.7<\/a>) he is named \u201cGiohanne batista rosso.\u201d\u00a0 But as Franklin pointed out one payment of 18 June 1514 for Rosso\u2019s <i>Assumption<\/i> at SS. Annunziata (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/paintings\/p-3\/\">P.3<\/a>) calls him only \u201cGiovanni Batista dipintore,\u201d but this is in a sequence of documents where he is elsewhere called \u201cGiovanni Batista di Jacopo\u201d and \u201cGiovanni Batista decto el Rosso dipintore.\u201d\u00a0 Hence it is not absolutely certain that the assistant to Feltrini is Rosso Fiorentino.\u00a0 Five days later a \u201cGiovanni Batista dipintore\u201d was also paid to assist Baccio da Montelupo at the Annunziata (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-6\/\">L.6<\/a>).\u00a0 However, Franklin pointed out that no other artist with the name Giovanni Battista appears in the Annunziata documents, making it likely that Rosso is the assistant in both these documents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1513 SS.
