{"id":7649,"date":"2012-11-27T16:57:48","date_gmt":"2012-11-27T21:57:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/?page_id=7649"},"modified":"2016-05-24T18:07:25","modified_gmt":"2016-05-24T22:07:25","slug":"l-1","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-1\/","title":{"rendered":"L.1 Drawings after Masaccio\u2019s Frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before c. 1512 In the \u201cLife\u201d of Masaccio, Vasari, 1550, 288, mentions that Rosso drew from the frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel; his name appears in Vasari\u2019s second list of artists who drew from the frescoes that includes Raphael, Granacci, Lorenzo di Credi, Ridolfo Ghirlandaio, Andrea del Sarto, Franciabigio, Bandinelli, Alonso Spagnuolo [Berruguete], Pontormo, Perino del Vaga, and Toto Nunziata.\u00a0 Vasari, 1568, I, 300 (Vasari-Milanesi, II, 299), the same.\u00a0 There is evidence in Rosso\u2019s early <i>Assumption<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.3a-Assumption-color-restored.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.3a<\/a>), in his Volterra <i>Deposition<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.9a-Volterra-Deposition-color.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.9a<\/a>), and in his <i>Unity of the State<\/i> at Fontainebleau (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.22-VI-S-a-Unity.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.22, VI S a<\/a>) that he did indeed study Masaccio\u2019s paintings.\u00a0 Among the numerous early sixteenth century drawings in various collections that are copies of Masaccio\u2019s frescoes it may eventually be possible to recognize Rosso\u2019s very youthful hand.<a href=\"#endref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 He may well have drawn from Masaccio\u2019s frescoes before the time that he worked on the predella of Sarto\u2019s San Gallo <i>Annunciation<\/i> of around 1512 (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-1-2\/\">L.2<\/a>). \u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> Falciani, 1994, 23, n. 30, continued to give the <i>Copy of a Figure in Masaccio\u2019s \u201cSt. Peter Baptizing the Neophytes,\u201d<\/i> Naples, Capodimonte, Gabinetto dei Disegni, no. 783 (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/11\/Bandinelli-Naples.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.Bandinelli, Naples<\/a>), to Rosso, but this seems to be a very early drawing by Bandinelli (see Carroll, 1964 [1976], II, Bk.
