Karpinski compared this figure with Rosso\u2019s Gods in Niches<\/em> engraved by Caraglio.\u00a0 This comparison is not sufficiently close to support this attribution.\u00a0 The pose of the figure and the disposition of his drapery are too stiff for Rosso, and his head is too coarse a type.\u00a0 He should, to be by Rosso, look more like the figures in Rosso\u2019s Disputation Between Two Old Men<\/em> (Fig.D.2<\/a>) or the Standing Apostle<\/em> (Fig.D.36a<\/a>) in the British Museum.\u00a0 The Philosopher in a Niche<\/em> seems dependent on a model by an artist of the generation after Rosso.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
