Russell.\u00a0 Kenneth Clark.\u00a0 Sale, Sotheby\u2019s, London, 19 April 1967.<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE:<\/p>\n<p>Grossmann, in <em>Between Renaissance and Baroque<\/em>, 1965, 110, no. 369, as Rosso, in his Roman period.<\/p>\n<p>B\u00e9guin, 1966, 58, as not by Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The attribution to Rosso, which was apparently held by Clark, was supported by Grossmann by comparison with the <em>Group of Nude Warriors in a Landscape<\/em> in the Louvre (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/RD.31-Group-of-Nude-Warriors-Louvre.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.RD.31<\/a>) that he accepted as Rosso\u2019s in his Roman period.\u00a0 B\u00e9guin found this connection questionable, adding that the attribution to Rosso did not hold up in comparison to Rosso\u2019s drawings of the Roman period, such as the Edinburgh study for Eve in the Cesi Chapel (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/11\/D.-10-bw-Seated-Nude-Woman-Edinburgh.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.10<\/a>).\u00a0 I do not believe the Louvre drawing is by Rosso.\u00a0 Nor do any drawings certainly by Rosso done at any time in his career support an attribution to him.<\/p>\n<p>Graphically the <em>Lamentation<\/em> resembles the <em>Copy of an Ignudo by Michelangelo<\/em> at Chatsworth (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/RD.4-Copy-of-an-Ignudo-bw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.RD.4<\/a>), although the <em>Lamentation<\/em> is looser in its shading and with forms that are also less clearly outlined.\u00a0 The differences of subject and the fact that the Chatsworth drawing is a copy after Michelangelo would account for some dissimilarities.\u00a0 But the degree of generalization in the <em>Lamentation<\/em> seems to indicate a different artist.\u00a0 Whereas the Chatsworth drawing may be by Berruguete, the <em>Lamentation<\/em> could have been done by Pedro Machuca.\u00a0 Stylistically it reminds me of his <em>Madonna del Suffragio<\/em> of 1517 in Madrid (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/Machuca-Suffragio.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.Machuca, Suffragio<\/a>), and the <em>Madonna in Glory<\/em> in St. Petersburg (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/06\/RP.22a-Madonna-in-Glory.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.RP.22a<\/a>) that has been attributed to Rosso but that Longhi, 1969, thought might be by Machuca.\u00a0 The figures in the <em>Lamentation<\/em> bear some resemblance to figures in the drawing of <em>The Burning of a City<\/em> in the Louvre, which has been attributed to Machuca (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/Machuca-City.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.Machuca, City<\/a>).<a href=\"#endref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> Louvre, Inv. 591.\u00a0 See Roseline Bacou, in <em>Autour de Raphael, Dessins et peintures du Mus\u00e9e du Louvre<\/em>, exh. cat., Paris, 1983-1984, 112-113, no. 131, with Fig.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London, Kate Ganz Limited (1984).
