no wm. visible.\u00a0 Inscribed in pencil on the mat: <em>Clemente Bandinelli (L.M.)<\/em> [Luisa Marcucci].<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE:<\/p>\n<p>Berenson, 1903, 1938, 1961, no. 2416, as Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>Kusenberg, 1931, 135, 140, no. 23, as Rosso, around 1523.<\/p>\n<p>Barocchi, 1950, 201, Fig. 174 (<em>recto<\/em>), as Rosso, 1521-1523\/24.<\/p>\n<p>Longhi, 1951, 59 (1976, 99), as not by Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll, 1964 (1976), II, Bk. 2, 463-464, F. 13, 542-543, Bk. 3, Figs. 156-157, as Bandinelli, or one of his pupils, and possibly of the late 1520s.<\/p>\n<p>Harprath, 1994, 359, Fig. 2 (<em>recto<\/em>), 360-363, 361, Fig. 3 (<em>verso<\/em>), as studies for Rosso\u2019s <em>Dead Christ <\/em>and for the <em>Rape of the Sabines <\/em>engraved by Caraglio.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The drawings on the <em>recto<\/em> and <em>verso<\/em> of this sheet cannot be related to any drawings certainly by Rosso.\u00a0 In 1964 I thought they were by Bandinelli and compared the <em>recto<\/em> to his red chalk <em>Drunkenness of Noah<\/em> in the Uffizi (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/Bandinelli-Noah.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.Bandinelli, Noah<\/a>)<a href=\"#endref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> and to the red chalk <em>Group of Nine Nudes in Repose <\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/RD.7-Nine-Nudes.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.RD.7<\/a>), which I ascribed to Bandinelli.\u00a0The Leonardesque heads on the <em>verso<\/em> reminded me of his <em>Portrait of Jacopa Doni <\/em>in the Louvre (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/Bandinelli-Doni.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.Bandinelli, Doni<\/a>).<a href=\"#endref2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Ward did not include the Uffizi drawing in his catalogue of 1982.\u00a0 I do not think, however, that the drawing should be considered as part of the \u201csub-average Rosso material\u201d that Ward thought I wrongly shifted over to Bandinelli.<a href=\"#endref3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a> The figure on the <em>recto<\/em> has a vigor and an expertise in its anatomical definition, as well as a certain subtlety in the handling of the lights and shades, that bespeak an artist of talent and education.\u00a0 The Leonardesque heads on the <em>verso<\/em> reflect an artistic awareness of some poetic charm.\u00a0 If this drawing is not by Bandinelli then it is by someone who shares part of his background and artistic aspirations.\u00a0 I do not see the connections with Rosso\u2019s works that Harprath makes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> Uffizi 6912F;
