<em>verso<\/em>: pen and ink with the back of the figure shaded in red chalk; 40.3 x 23.3.\u00a0 Inscribed in ink at the bottom of the <em>verso<\/em>: <em>Mich Ang g<\/em>(?).\u00a0 There is a very small sketch of a male nude seen from the back at the lower right.<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE:<\/p>\n<p>Berenson, 1903, no. 2406, as Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>Kusenberg, 1931, 135, 139, no. 13, as Rosso, the <em>verso<\/em> perhaps a copy of a drawing by Bandinelli.<\/p>\n<p>Berenson, 1938, no. 2406, the <em>recto<\/em> and <em>verso<\/em> now looking more like Bandinelli.<\/p>\n<p>Barocchi, 1950, 206 and n. 3, Fig. 184 (<em>recto<\/em>), the <em>recto<\/em> as Rosso, in his Roman period, the <em>verso<\/em> as not by Rosso and closer to Bandinelli.<\/p>\n<p>Bologna and Causa, 1952, 59 (<em>recto<\/em>), as Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>Antal, 1956, 63, n. 100, and Fig. 24b (<em>recto<\/em>), as Rosso in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll, 1964 (1976), II, Bk. 2, 456-457, F. 8, 540, Bk. 3, Figs. 148-149, as Bandinelli in the mid-1520s.<\/p>\n<p>Jaff\u00e9, 1994, T and U, under no. 57 (900), as Rosso.<a href=\"#endref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since Berenson attributed the drawing to Rosso the <em>recto<\/em> has been continually attributed to him although the <em>verso<\/em> has also been associated with Bandinelli.\u00a0 I do not see any differences in conception or handling, only in media, between the <em>recto<\/em> and the <em>verso<\/em>, and thought that they were both by Bandinelli.\u00a0 Ward in 1982 did not catalogue the drawing, indicating that he did not think it is by Bandinelli.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the lumpy muscular figure of the <em>recto<\/em> nor the stereotypical muscular nude of the <em>verso<\/em> resemble Rosso\u2019s figures, and the graphic vagueness of the <em>recto<\/em> and the regularity of the penmanship of the <em>verso<\/em> are not relatable to the draughtsmanship of any drawings certainly attributable to Rosso.\u00a0 The drawing still seems to me Bandinellian, and by the same artist who did several other drawings, listed in <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/rejected-drawings\/rd-03\/\">RD.3<\/a>, that have been wrongly attributed to Rosso, or by a closely related artist with a very similar Bandinellian style.\u00a0 The penmanship of the <em>verso<\/em> is related to that of the <em>Two Old Seated Women Conversing<\/em> in St. Petersburg (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/RD.35-Two-Old-Women-Conversing.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.RD.35<\/a>).\u00a0 It is very similar also to that of a pen and ink <em>Nude Male Seen from the Back with His Left Foot Raised on a Rock<\/em> in a private collection in Italy that has been attributed to Vincenzo de\u2019 Rossi and dated in or shortly after 1560.<a href=\"#endref2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The penmanship is also like that of Bandini\u2019s drawings.<a href=\"#endref3\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> Ciardi, 1994, 93, n. 71, refers to Uffizi 13849 as by Rosso (Barocchi, 1950, 218-219, Fig. 199, as perhaps by Bachiacca).\u00a0 From Ciardi\u2019s comments on p.33, I think he may mean Uffizi 6473F.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref2\"><\/a><sup>2<\/sup> R. A.
