{"id":4991,"date":"2012-05-03T12:47:56","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T16:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.vassar.edu\/rosso\/?page_id=4991"},"modified":"2012-07-02T11:06:10","modified_gmt":"2012-07-02T15:06:10","slug":"domenico-del-barbiere","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/engravings\/domenico-del-barbiere\/","title":{"rendered":"DOMENICO DEL BARBIERE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Domenico del Barbiere, also called Domenico Fiorentino, is mentioned by Vasari (1568, II, 211; Vasari-Milanesi, V, 170-171) in his \u201cLife\u201d of Rosso as one of his assistants at Fontainebleau: \u201cMa il migliore di tutti fu Domenico del Barbieri che \u00e8 pittore, e Maestro di stucchi eccellentissimo e disegnatore straordinario, come ne dimostrano le sue opere stampate, che si possono annoverare fra le migliori, che vadano atorno.\u201d\u00a0 He is mentioned by Vasari in his \u201cLife\u201d of Primaticcio (1568, III, 800; Vasari-Milanesi, VII, 412) as assisting that artist after Rosso\u2019s death.\u00a0 The earliest documentary reference to Barbiere at Fontainebleau is a payment to him within the period 1 January 1538 (new style) and 31 December 1540 (Laborde, <em>Renaissance<\/em>, I, 1850, 399), but its placement of the records of payments suggests that the payment to him was made early in 1540.\u00a0 The document does not necessarily indicate that he was working under Rosso.\u00a0 As there are no earlier references to his activity at Fontainebleau it may be questioned, if he did work under Rosso, just how long he did so, as Rosso died in November 1540.\u00a0 In spite of Vasari\u2019s praise of him in the context of his \u201cLife\u201d of Rosso, the evidence of Barbiere\u2019s art does not suggest, as is sometimes stated, that he was a pupil of Rosso\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Vasari does not say that Barbiere did any works after Rosso\u2019s designs.\u00a0 However, the models of five of Barbiere\u2019s engravings have more than once been attributed to Rosso.\u00a0 But only one, the <em>Fame<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/04\/E.5-Barbiere-Fame-Paris-Ba-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.E.5<\/a>), has a good claim to this distinction.\u00a0 The designs of the others (RE.1-4) show Rosso\u2019s influence but also Primaticcio\u2019s, and it is likely that they are Barbiere\u2019s own inventions.\u00a0 Zerner (1969, XXXVIII) dated all of Barbiere\u2019s prints between 1540 and 1545.\u00a0 Wardropper (1985, 26, 29) thought some of his prints may date from the late 1530s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Domenico del Barbiere, also called Domenico Fiorentino, is mentioned by Vasari (1568, II, 211; Vasari-Milanesi, V, 170-171) in his \u201cLife\u201d of Rosso as one of his assistants at Fontainebleau: \u201cMa il migliore di tutti fu Domenico del Barbieri che \u00e8 pittore, e Maestro di stucchi eccellentissimo e disegnatore straordinario, come ne dimostrano le sue opere [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":0,"parent":824,"menu_order":6,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-4991","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/4991","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/13"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=4991"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/4991\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6118,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/4991\/revisions\/6118"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/824"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=4991"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
