As Kusenberg said (see above), the two foreground figures are related to two in the same direction in Rosso\u2019s relief in the gallery (Fig.P.22, WestWall, d<\/a>), although in the etching they are clothed and the arm of the foremost figure is raised.\u00a0 No print is known of the composition of this relief.\u00a0 Limosin could possibly have worked from the relief itself, provided he was at Fontainebleau, which is not certain.\u00a0 There could, of course, have been a print that is now lost.\u00a0 Or he could have known a lost drawing by Rosso for this relief.\u00a0 However, he could have made his etching from a lost drawing by Rosso of the entire scene of his print.\u00a0 If this was the case, we cannot know how specifically he followed Rosso\u2019s model.<\/p>\n

The sleeping apostle with his arms crossed over his chest also resembles an apostle in Rosso\u2019s Agony in the Garden<\/em> of 1528 or 1529 engraved by Cherubino Alberti in 1574 (Fig.E.3<\/a>).\u00a0 These figures are not identical but they are sufficiently similar to encourage one to think that Limosin\u2019s etching is derived from a drawing by Rosso that he made in France with some recollection of his earlier composition of the same subject.<\/p>\n

ENAMEL: There is no known independent enamel of this scene. But the composition of the etching that was used for the Agony in the Garden<\/em> appears in the background at the upper left of Limosin\u2019s Kiss of Judas<\/em> in Baltimore (Verdier, 1967, 175-177, no. 107).\u00a0 Limosin\u2019s etching of the Kiss of Judas<\/em> (Fig.E.95<\/a>) does not show this episode.\u00a0 The pose of the apostle at the left has been changed to accommodate this figure to the curved edge of the enamel.\u00a0 The setting has also been altered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
