Wilson-Chevalier, in <em>Fontainebleau<\/em>, 1985, 241-242, no. 85 (Paris, Ba 12).<\/p>\n<p>Carroll, 1987, 31, 45, 244-245, with Fig. (Paris, Eb 14d).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The print is in reverse of Rosso\u2019s painting in the Gallery of Francis I (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.22-III-S-a-Adonis-bw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.22, III S a<\/a>) and could be based on Rosso\u2019s lost drawing that is known from two copies in Cambridge (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.63A-Adonis-Cambridge.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.63A<\/a>) and Dresden, formerly (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.63B-Adonis-Dresden.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.63B<\/a>).\u00a0 The very small differences between these copies and Fantuzzi\u2019s etching are specified in the catalogue entry of the gallery (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/paintings\/p-22\/iii-south-the-death-of-adonis-and-the-funeral-of-hector\/\" target=\"_blank\">P.22, III S<\/a>).\u00a0 But one difference, the upper nudity of the fleeing woman at the right in the print, may indicate that the etching was made from a different but otherwise very similar lost drawing by Rosso.\u00a0 In the fresco, this figure is fully clothed, again suggesting that the print is derived from a slightly earlier drawing than that represented by the two copies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Etching by Antonio Fantuzzi, 29.5 x 42.3 L (London).
