(15.5 x 22.8 S).\u00a0 New York, 62.525, no. 41.<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Geym\u00fcller, 1887, 56, 173, Fig. 86, 192.<\/p>\n<p>Jessen, 1920, 64, Fig. 45.<\/p>\n<p>Kusenberg, 1931, 68.<\/p>\n<p>B\u00e9guin and Pressouyre, 1972, 132.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This etching, which is related to the frame of the<em> Dana\u00eb<\/em> in the Gallery of Francis I, is largely and freely derived from Fantuzzi\u2019s etching, without the view of a town on the sea in the center (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/04\/E.69-Triads-of-Female-Terms-Paris-Ed-8b-Res.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.E.69<\/a>), and with the F below eliminated and the small circular scene above replaced by a flaming salamander.\u00a0 But the inclusion of the salamander and the height of the volutes above the baskets at the sides suggest that Du Cerceau also knew the Milan-Boyvin engraving (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/04\/E.103-Nymph-Paris-Ba-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.E.103<\/a>).\u00a0 Du Cerceau shows the dogs, which do not appear in the gallery, as shaggy.\u00a0 The drapery around the hips of the women that appears in the Milan-Boyvin print is not found in Fantuzzi\u2019s and Du Cerceau\u2019s etchings.\u00a0 The panel at the far right has decoration as in the gallery and in the engraving, but different from both in its design.<\/p>\n<p>DERIVATION, PRINT: Title page of Ariosto\u2019s <em>Roland Furieux<\/em>, Lyons, 1544.\u00a0 LITERATURE: McAllister Johnson, 1965, 299, n. 3, the flanking figures derived from the stuccoes of the <em>Dana\u00eb<\/em> wall in the Gallery of Francis I.\u00a0 McAllister Johnson and Graham, 1968, 9.\u00a0 Zerner, 1972, 115, 118, Fig. 179, as derived from the prints made of the decorations in the Gallery of Francis I.<\/p>\n<p>Details of the triads of female terms of this title page indicate that they were derived from Du Cerceau\u2019s etching.\u00a0 To be noted are the full view of the tilted heads of the outermost figures and the particular drawing of the hand touching the torso of the central figure of each group.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cartouche, Cut at the Left and Slightly at the Right, with Triads of Female Terms Flanking an Oval Etching by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau, 16 x 23 (Jessen).
