The engraving is related to the first version of Rosso\u2019s Scene of Sacrifice<\/em> in the Gallery of Francis I (P.22, VII N<\/a>) and is in the same direction as this scene.\u00a0 It is specifically based on a drawing in reverse in the Ensba in Paris that is derived from a lost drawing by Rosso of c. 1532-1534 (Fig.D.51<\/a>).\u00a0 The drawing seems to be by Etienne Delaune.\u00a0 Compositionally, it is also very similar to another lost drawing by Rosso known from four copies (D.50A, B, C, D<\/a>), except that the print is in reverse and contains one additional figure.\u00a0 As Zerner pointed out (see above), the manner of the engraving is not Boyvin\u2019s.\u00a0 The technique very much resembles Delaune\u2019s, although this was not recognized by Boorsch.\u00a0 The print does, however, seem to have been made directly from a drawing that may be by Delaune.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
