Vienna, F.I.3, p.25, no. 63.<\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Kusenberg, 1931, 161, as Boyvin.<\/p>\n<p>Linzeler, 1932, 177, as Boyvin.<\/p>\n<p>Borea, 1980, 262, no. 675, as Boyvin.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll, 1987, 11, 340-341, no. 106, with Fig. (Vienna).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The validity of the inscription to Rosso on this print is clearly supported by the style of the image.\u00a0 In the unusual and dramatic placement of the figures in their niches, this print resembles Rosso\u2019s <em>Gods in Niches<\/em> of 1526 (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/04\/E.26-Caraglio-Saturn-Florence-.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.E.26<\/a> and others of the series).\u00a0 But the figures in the <em>Cephalus and Procris<\/em> are grander in size and in the character of their postures and gestures.\u00a0 In these respects, they can be associated with those works by Rosso that seem to date from the last years of his life, such as the <em>Empedocles-St. Roch <\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.80a-Rosso-Empedocles-color-Getty.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.80a<\/a>), the <em>Annunciation<\/em> in D\u00fcsseldorf (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.83-Annunciation.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.83<\/a>), and the drawing (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.84a-Judith-color-LA-drawing.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.84a<\/a>) and painting (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/06\/P.24a-Los-Angeles-color.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.P.24a<\/a>) in Los Angeles.\u00a0 The invention of this engraving was probably made about the same time as these works in 1538-1540.<\/p>\n<p>Although the print could be related to a lost panel painting by Rosso that was at Fontainebleau at the end of the seventeenth century (see <a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/catalogues\/lost-works\/l-63\/\">L.63<\/a>), the separation of the two figures into two niches could indicate that they were originally designed for a wall decoration. \u00a0The engraver would have worked from a reverse drawing by Rosso (or a copy of it), possibly even the fine drawing probably wrongly attributed to L\u00e9onard Thiry catalogued here (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/09\/D.76B-Cephalus-and-Procis.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.76B<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Bearing neither Boyvin\u2019s name nor his monogram, the attribution of this print to him is uncertain, although it is beautifully engraved in a manner closely resembling his.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Engraving by Ren\u00e9 Boyvin?, 21 x 26.9 S (New York).\u00a0 Inscribed at the top center: Rous .
